To test if the tooth nerve is dead, the dentist will usually test it with a jet of cold water directly on the tooth (there are other more complex tests, but this I think is the most common) -- if you do not feel the cold, then the nerve is dead. However, I am afraid that in your case they will advise for a root canal or extraction, because it seems that the pulp/nerve of the tooth is infected.
