Here's an interesting journal article from 1932. The authors had measured the surface tension of 14 popular toothpastes--the article lists the ingredients of each toothpaste tested. Iodent was the only one that contained iodides.

I also found a short article on one of the former owners of the Iodent company. It mentioned that dentists used to swab the mouths of their patients with iodine.
